As a 501(c)3 non-profit, Johnson County Genealogical Society & Library can accept donations to support the society’s mission.
Most of the donations we receive are given to support the general mission of the society. They have no designation or time constraints. In the accounting world, we call these donations unrestricted funds. This means the Board can vote to spend these funds for any purpose that supports the society’s mission.
But did you know that you may designate your donations for a purpose? That’s right! A donor may provide funding to be used for a specific purpose. These are called restricted funds. By law, the society has to spend these funds for the specific purpose they were designated. Depending on the donor’s wish, unspent funds may be refunded back to the donor or used for general operating expenses.
Remember, your donation may be tax-deductible. It is best to consult your accounting or tax professionals to determine if your donation is tax-deductible.
